Rackspace, a leading cloud computing company, recently suffered a major security breach of its systems and have confirmed this was the result of ransomware.
In a statement on their website “… on Friday, December 2nd, 2022, we became aware of suspicious activity and immediately took proactive measures to isolate the Hosted Exchange environment to contain the incident. We have since determined this suspicious activity was the result of a ransomware incident”.
The ransomware attack on Rackspace’s servers has been particularly damaging, as it has disrupted email services for many customers. This has caused significant inconvenience for businesses and individuals who rely on Rackspace’s email services and may well have a detrimental impact on the company’s reputation.
This breach is a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in the modern world. As more and more businesses and individuals rely on cloud computing and other online services, the potential for data breaches and other cyber-attacks increases. It is essential that companies take the necessary steps to protect their systems / data and highlights the importance of having a good backup or business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solution.
As Rackspace are unable to provide a timeline for the restorations of their Hosted Exchange environments they are providing “Microsoft Exchange Plan 1” licenses at no cost to affected customers while also making sure resources are available to help customers migrate their users and domains to Microsoft 365.
Rackspace has apologized to its customers for the inconvenience caused by the breach and the ransomware attack and stated, “We are doing everything we can to make this right and will continue to provide updates and resources as available.”
